The Carbondale and SIUC Police departments are participating in the statewide Drive Safe ’98 program “An Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge.”

The program is designed to challenge Illinois police departments to emphasize community awareness in speed, seat belts, child safety restraints and impaired driving as contributing factors in traffic accidents.

During March, April and May the two departments will conduct parallel training and plan simultaneous education and enforcement activities in their respective jurisdictions.

The program is sponsored by the Illinois State Police, Northwestern Traffic Institute, Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Sheriff’s Association and the National Highway Traffic Administration.
