Saluki ballplayers host annual fish fry

By Gus Bode

Catfish Hunter, Steve Trout and Kevin Bass will not be there, but there will be plenty of fish at the second annual Saluki Baseball Fish Fry and Sports Memorabilia Auction.

The dinner includes fish, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, soft drinks and homemade desserts. There will be an auction of sports memorabilia after the dinner.

The doors open at 5 p.m. Friday at the Carbondale Civic Center, 200 S. Illinois Ave., and the auction starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. All proceeds go to the Saluki baseball program.

Some of the items available in the auction include a bat signed by Chipper Jones, a puck signed by Chris Chelios, a baseball signed by Mark McGwire and a baseball signed by Ken Griffey Jr.

There are more than 70 items up for grabs this year, and letters of authenticity accompany many of the items.

Baseball coach Dan Callahan said because of the success of the fish fry last year, it has now become the main fund-raiser for the baseball program.

Last year was the first one we had, and I think we served more than 600 dinners, Callahan said. It’s our biggest fund-raiser. I think if you ask some people who went last year, they’d say it was a good time, the food was good and there was plenty to eat. The price is reasonable.
