with much playing time, the Salukis managed to win four Missouri Valley Conference
opponents. including Wichita State twice. They also defeated St. Louis University.

1986-87:Wonl2, Lost 17– Increased win total to 12 and surprised Drake in a first-round game of the MVC
tournament. Lost to Tulsa on the road in the second game by only five points.
1987-88:Wonl2, Lost 16– Finished the season strong by winning four in a row over MVC opponents before losing
in OT to Bradley. Defeated Big Ten Conference team, Wisconsin, during regular season.
1988-89:Won20, Lost 14– Claimed one of biggest upsets in SIU history by whippingVillanova 102-81 on way to a
mid-season 13-3 record. Gained spot in MVC post-season tournament charnpionship
game before losing to Creighton. Nevertheless, received bid to play in NIT for first time

1989-90:Won26, Lost 8– Set new SIU record for most wins in a single season (26). Entered final month of regular
season with an 18-4 record. Finished with a 10-4 MVC record and league charnpionship,
the only time in history the Salukis have won it outright. Won Tenn.-Chattanooga Inv.
Tournament title. Lost to Illinois State in MVC tournament championship game.
Received second straight NIT bid.
1990-91:Wonl8, Lost 14– Won Old Style Inv. Tournarnent in Chicago by defeating Oklahoma State andWicsonsin
Green Bay. Although owning only a 16-13 record, received third straight NITbid and
won first two garnes on road before losing to eventual champion Stanford in SIUArena.
1991-92:Won22, Lost 8– Won second MVC championship under Herrin although forced to share title with Illinois
State. Upset by Tulsa in semi-final MVC tournament game, but still was invited to play
in NIT for fourth year in a row.
1992-93:Won 23 Lost 10– Finished second in MVC by one game, but upset regular-season champ Illinois State in
post-season tournament championship game to qualify for NCAA tournament. It was the
first time since 1977 for SIU and only second time in school history. Salukis lost to Duke.
Won23, Lost 7– Tied for second place in MVC during regular season, but topped Northern Iowa in post-
season tournament title game to advance to NCAAtournarnent for second time in a row.
Lost to Minnesota in first round game at Sacramento.
1994-95:Won23, Lost 9– Again tied for second place in MVC during regular season, but again won post-season
lMVC tournament to make third straight trip to NCAA and seventh straight post-season
toumament appearance. Lost to Syracuse by four in a thriller atAustin, Texas.
Vonll, Lost 18– Personnel losses were costly and team suffered its first below-.500 season since Herrin’s
1996-97:Wonl3, Lost 17– Finished below .500 for second year in a row, but Herrin increased his SIU record to
211-158 and MVC record to 103-93. The 211 is second most victories by any one coach
in SIU history and the 103 MVC wins is fourth best in league history and just 13 behind
number-three Dr. F. C. Allen.
