Two SIUE students hit by vehicle on campus

Two college students were struck by a truck while crossing University Drive during Monday’s rainstorm.

SIU-Edwardsville Police Chief Kevin Schmoll confirmed that two female students were struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of University Drive and North Circle Drive as they crossed the street on a crosswalk during the rain at about 1 p.m. Monday.

That stretch of University Drive lies between the large student parking lots to the east and the main campus buildings to the west, and students are often seen crossing back and forth.

Schmoll said the two students, whose names were not released by police, were examined at the scene by paramedics and declined further medical treatment.

Driver Cody Kinsel, 20, of Petersburg, was cited for failure to yield to pedestrians on a crosswalk. Kinsel is listed as an engineering student at SIU-E.

The speed limit on that stretch of University Drive is 25 mph, Schmoll said, and they also use traffic enforcement and radar trailers to keep drivers aware.

Most of the pedestrian traffic occurs between daytime classes, he said.

“We don’t get more than maybe one or two hit a year, which is remarkable considering how many thousands of pedestrians cross there,” Schmoll said.

Traffic on northbound University Drive was redirected around the scene for a short time.
