The university is banning hoverboards on campus because of fire safety concerns, according to an SIU press release.

“We ask students returning to campus for the spring semester to leave them at home,” Kevin Bame, vice chancellor for administration and finance, said in the news release.

SIU follows more than 30 universities, including the University of Missouri and University of Illinois, in banning the two-wheeled scooters in the past month, The Associated Press reports.

The motorized scooters are associated with fire that may occur while “charging or spontaneously during use,” according to the news release.

Hoverboards are not allowed to be used, possessed or stored anywhere on campus, according to the university’s policy. The policy also includes university employees and visitors.
