Christopher McHugh, a senior from Chatham, took first place in the video/music/variety/special program category for his directorial role in the student-produced show “Studio A.” His winning segment will advance to the National Broadcasting Society’s larger competition this spring.

The winning segment featured a country music performance by the Mike Whitney Band.

McHugh said he was thrilled when he found out he’d won and was thankful for the support from the radio-television faculty.

“SIUC has a very hands-on radio and television program,” he said. “It gives students like me an advantage to put out these shows.”

Doug Smart, an assistant professor in radio and television, said he isn’t surprised that McHugh won the award

“He’s worked very hard,” he said. “This one is just one of several awards we’ve won over the past five years. It’s fantastic.”

After graduation McHugh has his sights set on writing comedy in Chicago or Hollywood. Until then it’s classes and more directing.

“I couldn’t have done this without my family and Doug Smart,” he said.
