Banter: Build an NFL team

By Gus Bode

The NFL free agency period began at 12:01 a.m. EST. If you had to start from scratch, what free agent would you like to build a team around?

Luis C. Medina

With Ray Lewis hitting the market, it is a no-brainer. Defense wins championships and since Lewis is the best defensive player in the NFL, I would build my team around him. His presence alone made guys like Bart Scott and Terrell Suggs better. More than that, he is a leader, and teams thrive with strong leadership. That’s why Lewis is the only choice to build around.

Had Julius Peppers not been franchise-tagged, he’d be the answer. It has to be Albert Haynesworth, even though he’s a little bit of a risky proposition because he hasn’t appeared in all 16 games since 2002 and he’s missed more than five games twice in his career. But he wouldn’t be a disaster to give a big contract to (most likely, anyway), which is really all that matters in free agency.

Looking at the list, I would have to say Albert Haynesworth. A young, dominant middle lineman would be a keeper for any team. He could be a cornerstone of any defense for a long time. Now if only he could stay healthy for an entire year, I would love him even more.

Special Guest Star: Daniel Kolb

I’m going with Albert Haynesworth, because when he is playing at a high level he creates havoc at the middle of the line. He can’t be contained one on one and really takes away the run for a lot of teams. If he’s paired with another good DT his presence becomes even more amplified. He’s young and a quality free agent that doesn’t come around too often.
