Letter: AAF needs to rethink approach to challenging binge drinking

By Gus Bode

Dear Editor:

I greatly appreciate the efforts of the American Advertising Federation chapter to address a serious problem affecting millions of college students across the country, namely binge drinking. However, I seriously question the appropriateness of the display that is presented in the SIUC Student Center. It appears both demeaning and degrading, to women specifically.’

This is because: a) Barbie dolls are posed half-naked, wearing only what look like panties; and b) there are no male figures in the display at all. I am assuming the group sought to elicit interest and attention to the wall case, but I strongly encourage them to rethink their approach.
