Banter: Which favorite is vulnerable to the upset bug?

By Gus Bode

With the March Madness officially tipping off, who are your picks for the first high seed to be upset?

Going over my bracket, I have the No. 4 seed Wake Forest going down early.’ Some people have the former No. 1 team in the country in their Final Four, but I am betting on their inexperience and inconsistencies to hurt them.’ Wake Forest has played down to its competition at times this year, losing to teams like Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.’ I see the underrated Utah Utes taking them out in the second round.

I’m jumping on the anti-Duke bandwagon. They’ve been knocked out early the last two years, and I’m not sure if there’s enough frontcourt firepower to carry them deep in the tournament. Guard play can take you far and Coach K is one of the best in the business, but since there’s no Kobe, LeBron or D-Wade on Duke, I don’t see Coach K winning another basketball championship this year.

My two first-round upsets: 14th-seeded Stephen F. Austin taking out No. 3 seed Syracuse, and Portland State, a 13 seed, shocking Xavier. I like Portland State because of their early-season upset of Gonzaga, and I think Syracuse is susceptible to an upset because of that six-overtime game it played.
