Baseball falls to Saint Louis

Saint Louis vaulted itself past the Saluki baseball team with the help of a five-run third inning Tuesday.

SIU (25-27) fell 8-5 to Saint Louis (38-15) Tuesday in Sauget. Sophomore right-hander Aaron Snyder (1-4, 2.73 ERA) started his first game with the Salukis and only gave up one run through the first three innings.

Saint Louis, who was the away team, led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run off the bat of junior outfielder Alex Kelly. After the next batter walked, Snyder was taken out of the game for sophomore right-hander Matt Murphy.

Murphy gave up three more runs on three hits and two walks before he was taken out for sophomore right-hander Lee Weld, who finished the inning. Neither Murphy nor Snyder recorded an out in the fourth, despite giving up five runs.

SIU tried to come back in the bottom of the sixth after Saint Louis made the score 8-1, but the Salukis were only able to scratch together four runs. After sophomore shortstop Jake Welch walked with the bases loaded and one out to make the score 8-5, the next two batters made outs and stranded all three runners.

The Salukis only recorded one hit after the sixth inning and lost 8-5.

SIU returns home for its last three-game series of the season when they take on IPFW. First pitch of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at Abe Martin Field.
