Student seriously injured after fall

A student fell from the fourth floor of University Hall early Friday morning.

An email sent to all SIU students and faculty from Chancellor Rita Cheng stated Tyler Gravitt, a freshman from Matteson, is in the intensive care unit of a St. Louis hospital. Cheng asked for everyone to support Gravitt and his family.

The email also said the SIU Department of Public Safety’s initial investigation shows the incident was an accident.

Students and Carbondale residents who walked by University Hall between late Thursday evening and early Friday morning noticed multiple police cars, an ambulance and police tape marking off the north side of the building.

A student who lives at University Hall said the windows in the bedrooms do not have screens.

Individuals on the scene gave unconfirmed reports that a student had taken a fall from the fourth floor window of the building. Police and SIU faculty on the scene declined to comment until they are ready to give an official press release.
