Women’s Golf competes at Bama Beach Bash

SIU golfer Moyea Russell takes some swings on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 at Hickory Ridge Public Golf Course in Carbondale, Illinois. Russell, who was named MVC golfer of the week recipient in late September, after hitting three rounds of 74, 73, and 74 for a total score of 221 (+5) to tie for eight place overall.

The Salukis headed to the Gulf Shores Country Club in Alabama as they participated in the Bama Beach Bash from March 19-21. Their play progressively slowed, as SIU placed highest at 6th out of 15 teams during the first round on Sunday before slipping the next two days into 11th and 12th, respectively.

Southern finished sixth on Sunday as they collectively carded a score of 308 (+20) in the opening round. They were anchored by Janie Samattiyadeekul as she finished third golfing a 73 (+1) along with three birdies. Samattiyadeekul would end up finishing fifth overall in the tournament. Kylee Vaughan also had a nice showing as she tied for eighth posting a 74 (+2) with two birdies. Ella Overstreet tied for 42nd as she shot 80 (+8) and Secilia Ho shared 54th place after posting an 81 (+9) on the day.

The course wasn’t as kind to the Dawgs on Monday as they ended the day in 11th with a total score of 318 (+50). Samattiyadeekul was consistent on the second day as she finished shooting a 74. Vaughan moved down to 27th overall as she shot a score of 81 in the second round. Overstreet came in tied at 50th as she shot another 80. Ho and Ayanna Habeel both shot scores of 80.

The Salukis moved lower once again on the final day as they placed 12th after shooting 316 in the third round. Samattiyadeekul led the way once again, carding a score of 76. Vaughan was close behind golfing a 78 score and finishing 37th overall at the Bash. Overstreet posted an 84 in the last round and Ho finished with a score of 83 ending the tournament tied at 61st and 67th, respectively. Habeel placed 69th with a total score of 249 over the three days.

Morgan Gindler and Adriana Vinterova competed individually, finishing tied for 72nd and 80th, respectively. Over the three rounds, Gindler shot 87, 81, and 85. Vinterova improved each day, turning in scores of 104, 87, and 85.

SIU women’s golf’s next competition will be in less than two weeks. at the Pinetree Country Club Women’s Invitational. The event will be hosted by Kennesaw State on April 3 and 4.
