Track and Field Stuns in MVC indoor championships

SIU’s indoor Track and Field teams tallied four gold medals at the MVC Championships this past Sunday and Monday. The men’s team finished fourth overall out of the nine MVC Conference schools with 82 points and the women’s team placed fifth out of their 10 conference teams with 57 points.

Each team had two different members finish with a gold medal. Dawson Plab and Xavier Preston both won first place in the high jump and 200m dash respectively for the men and Shauniece O’Neal and Iaunia Pointer both earned gold in weight throw and 200m dash races.

O’neal and Plab also each earned most outstanding field athlete awards at the championships, ranked by NCAA’s highest-ranking individual performance list.

Pointer, Plab, O’Neal, and Matisen Ingle earned National Qualifications for their events. Ingle earned the weight throw qualification right alongside O’Neal, Plab with his high jump, and Pointer in the 200m dash as well.

Both men’s and women’s 4x400m teams earned a silver medal. The men consisted of Bryson Wilson, Preston, Jeremiah Hilton, and Shane Ashton all finalising a 3:14.13 time. The women who competed were Miracle Berry, Shavell Riley, Vashti Gray, and Iaunia Pointer who tallied a 3:46.71 time.

Pointer also earned silver in the 200m dash as well as Dasani Edwards in the men’s triple jump.

The next time the dawgs will compete will be at the NCAA Nationals in Albuquerque New Mexico on March 10th-11th, while the rest will look forward to a bit of rest before getting into outdoor season.
