Saluki freshman Madison Meiring drives the ball forward on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 during the Salukis’ 2-1 win in overtime against the Morehead State Eagles at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.

The Salukis were coming off a tie against top-3-seeded Valpo on Thursday, so SIU was hoping to cap off the season with a win on Sunday in Chicago. Unfortunately for Southern Illinois, UIC pulled off the upset victory, 0-1.

As per usual, the Salukis’ defense was stellar tonight. This game continues their six-game streak of not allowing more than one goal.

It was within the last minute of the first half, 44:33 exactly, in which the game’s only goal was scored off of a penalty kick. It was a colossal momentum advantage for the Flames as they headed into the break.

The Salukis continued fighting in the second half, but it just wasn’t enough. SIU failed to put itself in a position to tie the game.

The loss places SIU in the fourth spot for the Missouri Valley Tournament, which will be Southern Illinois’ first-ever appearance. They will play the winner of #5 Drake and #8 Murray State.

They will play the winner of Drake and Murray State on Sunday, October 30 at home. They are still without head coach Craig Roberts, who is on administrative leave. It is unclear whether that be lifted before Sunday.
