The Salukis celebrate after a goal by Madison Meiring on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 during the Salukis’ 2-1 win in overtime against the Morehead State Eagles at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.

Southern Illinois hosted the Murray State Racers on Thursday, October 13 in a highly anticipated matchup. It’s crunch time for the Dawgs, with only four conference games left to prove themselves.

SIU looks like a whole new team behind new head coach Craig Roberts, and they will be attending the Missouri Valley tournament for the first time ever this season.

The battle between the Racers was a hard-fought one, as both teams pride themselves on defense. Neither team scored within the first half of play.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams getting shots on goal, followed by sighs of disappointment from their respective fans.

The moment of glory came at 84:17, in which a player for the Racers committed a yellow card penalty. Because of this, ___ Lara Barbieri Da Silva had the opportunity to kick a penalty shot goal.

She capitalized on her chance, giving the Dawgs the one-point lead, which they rode until the final buzzer.

The women’s soccer team will play their next opponent, the Illinois State Redbirds, on Sunday, October 16. This game will take place at home.
