Salukis soccer continues streak of success; is this the spark of a turnaround for SIU?

The Salukis fight for the ball on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 during the Salukis’ 2-1 win in overtime against the Morehead State Eagles at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.

The Salukis (2-2-1) faced off against their Southern Illinois rival, SIU-Edwardsville (1-3-2), in a heated match on Thursday, September 8. The Dawgs managed to prevent a loss and ended the game in a tie, 1-1.

Southern Illinois-Carbondale started firing from the jump, as they had a shot at the goal just around the 2:45 mark. It was unsuccessful, and neither team got a good look at the box for the remainder of the first period.

The second half of the game is when it got scrappy.

The Salukis quickly had shots at the goal but missed on both attempts, roughly 10 minutes into the second half. It was the Cougars who got on the board first, with a goal 10 minutes later, at the 65:36 mark.

SIUC wouldn’t go down without a fight. On the Salukis’ fourth attempt on the day, senior forward Liz Bretchel scored a goal off an assist from senior forward Emma Spotak. Both teams had about 20 minutes left to drive home the win.

It came down to the wire, with senior midfielder Sam DeJulio getting a yellow card at 87:26 in the heat of the moment. The Dawgs had another opportunity to score at the 89:35 mark, but it was just off, and the game came to a close, 1-1.

The Salukis play their next game on the road at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This will be SIU’s second straight rivalry game, so they should hope to make a statement on Sunday, September 12.
