Saluki Soccer scores third goal of season, lose against Murray State 3-1

The SIU Women’s Soccer team (0-7-1) traveled to Murray, Kentucky on Sunday for a match against the Racers (4-3)  in which they lost 3-1.

The Salukis were outshot 19-16 on the day, with eight of those being on goal and lost the margin of corner kicks 3-2. The day was filled with lots of fouls by both teams, combining for 19 total fouls. Nine of those came from the Salukis and ten of those from the Racers.

Headlining the Salukis on offense were senior midfielder Hailey Blanchard, sophomore forward Sam Dodd, and freshman defender Kylie Mcdermott. Blanchard gave the Salukis their third goal of the season in the first half. She was assisted by Dodd, who had three shots on the day, two of them being on goal. Mcdermott led the Salukis in shots on the day, with five of her own and two of them being on goal.

Junior defender Paris Walsh, sophomore forward Mckinley Stiff, freshman midfielder Ashley Scesniak, junior midfielder Kaitlin Ducharme, and sophomore forward Mckensey Bunch all combined for the other seven shots the Salukis had on the day.

Junior goalkeeper Maddy Alaluf was the starter against the Racers. She allowed all three goals the Racers earned but had eight total saves on the day.

The match started off with three shots by Murray State in the first ten minutes, but SIU got some momentum going with three shots of their own in the next ten minutes.

The Racers broke the scoring open with a goal by freshman defender Morgan Bodker at the 20-minute mark. Bodker was assisted by senior forward Abby Jones.

The Salukis answered quickly with a goal of their own less than five minutes later. Blanchard was assisted by Dodd to tie things up at one-all.

The score remained 1-1 to end the first half. The Salukis actually were outshooting the Racers 10-9 at the end of the first half.

The second half started off well for the Racers, with a goal by Graduate Student Forward Rebecca Kubin a little over five minutes coming back from half. Kubin was assisted by Bodker.

The Salukis were playing catch-up the rest of the match. Down by a goal, SIU got 4 shots off before Murray State sealed the deal with 11 minutes left of play on another goal by sophomore defender Riley Johnson. Johnson was assisted by Kubin to make the score 3-1.

The Salukis only got two more shots off the rest of the match and lost with the score remaining 3-1.

The Salukis continue to look for their first win of the season in Normal Illinois Saturday September 25 with a 6 pm kickoff time against the Illinois State University Redbirds.
