The Saluki men’s golf team finished third overall in the Missouri Valley Conference championship on April 26 and 27.

Southern Illinois finished with a score of 45 over par, which put them 14 strokes behind first place Loyola Chicago and 10 strokes behind the Illinois State Redbirds.

The tournament’s top golfer was Loyola senior Devin Johnson who finished even par. Saluki freshman Justin Wingerter finished tied for second overall in the event and won the MVC newcomer of the year award.

Salukis juniors Mathis Besard and Tom Cleaton also finished in the top 10, finishing sixth and tenth overall respectively.

The tournament was held in Flossmoor, Ill., at the Flossmoor Golf Club, and each team played three rounds over two days.

SIU went into the third round with a two stroke lead over Illinois State but the Redbirds shot a tournament best 286 on their final round to take second place.
