By Danny Connolly, Staff Reporter

SIU sent out alerts via text message and email to students after Carbondale Police responded to a report of shots fired near Oakland Avenue and Freeman Street Wednesday night. According to the police’s investigation, people in two separate cars fired at each other.

The SIU police department recovered an abandoned vehicle near Douglas and Lincoln Drive. A male in a yellow and orange shirt and a male in a white shirt and jeans exited the abandoned vehicle and entered a different car.

The SIU community received two timely alerts about shots being fired: one informing suspects of the shooting parked their vehicle on campus and entered Thompson Woods, and another that the suspects left campus 14 minutes later and headed north on Highway 51.
