SIU men’s swimming and diving take third in MAC Championships

Freshman, Gustav Persson, swims the men’s 200-breast stroke on Friday, March 19, 2021 in Carbondale, Ill.

SIU men’s swimming team participated in the Mid-American Conference Championships on April 8-10 and they finished in third place with 588.5 points. Southern finished the meet with school records broken and many Salukis making their personal-best. 

On the first day of competition, junior Zander Minano broke the school record in the 50-freestyle event with the time of 19.90 , winning first place. Freshman Donat Csuvarszki finished the 50-free in third place with a time of 20.06.

Sophomore Adam Cernek finished in fifth place in the 200-yard individual medley with his season best time of 1:48.92.

The Salukis’ 200-freestyle relay team consisting of Csuvarski, Cernek, Minano and freshman Marc Avery finished in second place on the first day of competition with a time of 1:19.66. SIU finished the first day in third place with 186 points.

On the second day, Southern’s 200-medley relay team of Cernek, Minano, Csuvarski, senior Kyle Berquist finished in second place with the time 1:28.56.

Sophomore Sam Flessner placed seventh in the 400-yard individual medley with his personal best time of 4:00.28 and freshman Will Chavez finished in fifth place.

Cernek won second place in the 100-backstroke with a time of 47.79. The Salukis took the first three spots in the 100-butterfly with Minano in first (48.92), followed by Avery (49.20) and sophomore Max Ransom (49.29).

SIU ended the day with a third place win in the 800-freestyle relay with the team Chavez, Cernek, sophomore Terry Yang and junior Zheng Yang Yeap and the Salukis finished in third place overall with 384.5 points.

The Salukis finished the last day of competition with Cernek winning the 200-backstroke final with the time 1:43.17 and breaking the school record

Csuvarski also finished in first place in the 100-freestyle final with the time 43.94, following him was Avery finishing in third place.

In the 400-freestyle relay, Avery, Chavez, Yeap and Csuvarski finished in second place with the time 2:56.40 breaking the school record by .57. SIU finished the meet in third place overall with the score 588.5.

The Salukis’ women’s swimming and diving team competes in the MVC Championships on April 14-16 at the Shea Natatorium.
