25 Salukis place in top five in the Ole Miss Classic

SIU track and field traveled to Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Classic and their second outdoor meet of the season Friday, Mar. 26, and Saturday, March 27.

Over the two-day event, a total of 25 Salukis finished in the top five in their events.

On the women’s side, senior sprinter and hurdler Savannah Long was the only woman to win her event, the 400 meter hurdles at 1:01.15, which was two seconds shy of a new personal record for her.

In the circle, senior thrower Shaunice O’Neal finished third in the hammer with a throw of 63.22 meters. 

Her counterpart, senior A’veun Moore Jones finished fourth in the shot put with her best throw coming in at 16.01 meters.

On the men’s side, freshman distance runner Ethan Senti won the 5000 meter race with a new personal record 15:07.38; the win also marked his first collegiate win in an outdoor event.

Southern took first and second in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with freshman Travis Hart coming in first with a personal record time of 9:49.71 and freshman Dawson Smith finishing behind him with a time of 9:49.74.

In the field events on the men’s side, senior thrower Ricky Hurley finished second in the hammer throw and third in the discus.

SIU will be traveling to Columbia, Mo., in the Tom Botts Invitational the weekend of April 9-10.
