Ramblers complete the sweep with second weekend win over the Salukis

The Southern Illinois women’s basketball team (5-7, 2-5 MVC) fell to the Loyola Chicago Ramblers (7-5,5-2 MVC), 55-46, on Jan. 31. 

The Salukis’ leading scorers were senior forward Abby Brockmeyer with 14 points, followed by senior guard Makenzie Silvey with eight. 

Brockmeyer also recorded a double-double as she added 13 rebounds to go along with her 14 points.

The Ramblers were led by senior guard Ellie Rice with 19 points.

The Salukis got off to a strong start gaining a quick 7-2 lead with the help of a 3-pointer from senior forward Rachel Pudlowski. 

However, the Ramblers were able to go on a 10-2 run, with five points from Rice, to take the lead 12-9 after the first quarter. 

Loyola started the second quarter on a 5-0 run but the Salukis were able to tie the game back up at 19 behind 3-pointers from junior guard Payton Mccallister and Silvey. 

Loyola was able to take a four-point lead into the half after senior guards Bre Hampton-Bey and Alexis Meyer scored late in the second quarter to push the score to 23-19. 

In the third quarter the Salukis weren’t able to cut into the lead as Rice scored 11 for the Ramblers. This extended the lead to five points with the score at the end of the third quarter being 38-33. 

In the fourth quarter, SIU was not able to cut the score to any closer than four points and the Ramblers walked away with the 55-46 win.

Southern’s next game will be in Carbondale against Illinois State on Friday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.
