Photo of the Day: Remembering the March on Washington

Sunflowers sit at the base of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue outside of the capitol in Springfield, IL Aug. 30 just two days after, the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In recent days, the statue of Dr. King Jr. has been noted as an option to replace the Stephen Douglas statue on the Illinois State Capitol grounds. The board of the Architect of the Capitol voted to remove the Douglas stature on Aug. 19 because Douglas profited from slavery. In addition, a statue of Pierre Menard that is located on the grounds will also be removed because of his history of owning slaves. The statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. currently resides across the street on the Eastside of the capitol building. (Jared Treece | @bisalo)
