AJ Travis, 16, of De Soto, takes the U.S. and Illinois Constitution tests Wednesday in preparation for his graduation from Carbondale Community High School’s Rebound program. “I wasn’t doing well in high school,” Travis said. “I was scared to go to classes because of the pressure of too many people and the pressure of doing well. … When I came here they told me the only thing holding you back is yourself. You are the leader of your own path. … This program is really important to a lot of people, especially myself because without it, I would be stuck at home with no direction. Because of this program I’m finally getting the education that I want and I’m finally going to go somewhere in life.” Travis is beginning his first semester at John A. Logan College this fall. The Rebound program, which assists people 16 years of age and older in their attainment of a secondary-education credential, faces possible closure fall semester if it does not receive state or federal funding. — April 27, 2016, Carbondale, Ill.
