Master’s students art work showcased at the Surplus Gallery

The exhibition is a project created by masters of fine art students from SIUs Art & Design and Media Art programs. Priscilla Pimentel, of Carbondale, said she came to the exhibition after reading about it online because she wanted to see work created by students. I like the collaborative effort, she said. There are some really complex ideas here. The show features various mediums including sculpture, photography, metalwork and performance art. Dimitar Velkov, a masters student in Mass Communication and Media Art who contributed to the show, said the purpose of creating the exhibition was to give students from different areas of study an opportunity to come together. Su-yeon Kim, left, a third-year graduate student in art with a glass specialization from Seoul, South Korea, and Clint Wilkie, a senior from Marion studying art with a glass specialization, work on a glass-blown pumpkins Saturday for the Great Glass Pumpkin Patch, an annual art sale that benefits the glass program. Kim decided to come to SIUC to pursue her master’s degree in glass after completing her bachelors degree in Korea. Kim one day hopes to be a full-time glass artist. The Great Glass Pumpkin Patch will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Town Square City Pavilion.
