16-year-old killed in shooting early Friday

A 16-year-old was shot and killed Nov. 1 at 1225 West Freeman Street according to a release by the Carbondale Police Department.

The police responded in response to a gunshot victim at approximately 2:44 a.m. At the scene, officers found 16-year-old Xe’Quan Campbell of Ziegler, Illinois in the stairway. 

Campbell was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale after being transported by the Jackson Country Ambulance Service according to the release.

Witnesses saw several individuals walking towards the apartment building before the shooting took place. According to the release the witnesses saw Campbell among those individuals and saw one of the individuals carrying a handgun.

An occupant from inside the apartment fired shots at the door after the victim banged on it and possibly attempted to open the door without identifying himself.

Detectives have determined the Campbell was a relative of one of the occupants of the apartment and may have been there in response to a call from the relative about an incident involving a firearm several hours before. 

The relative and others took shelter in a room nearby after seeing the individuals walking towards the apartment with a gun.

Officers have arrested those responsible for the shooting and taken them into custody according to the release. These same individuals were released from custody at the direction of the Jackson County State’s Attorney pending a review by his office.

This case remains active and under investigation.
