Austin Weiher to transfer from SIU

By Nathan Dodd, Sports editor

Forward Austin Weiher’s time at SIU has come to a close as he will be released from the team and will transfer for his final year of eligibility.

Weiher began his career at Southern as a redshirt freshman in the 2014-15 season and was a significant piece of the bench for the Salukis in 2015-16.

In his freshman campaign, Weiher appeared in 31 games and posted a .513 shooting percentage in 10.7 minutes per game.

In the next two seasons his playing time dwindled and he only appeared in 13 games for the Salukis in 2017-18.

The 6-foot-8 forward’s junior year got off to a rocky start as he underwent a foot surgery in the preseason. He went on to post 0.5 points per game and scored a season-high of four points at Evansville on Feb. 24.

The Salukis were out of scholarships to offer after securing their 2018-19 signing class, however, the transfer of Weiher will clear a scholarship for the program.

That one remaining scholarship will be award to the program’s newest signee, Jimmy Beane.

Beane, who also received offers from powerhouse programs such as Butler, Georgia, Florida State, Mississippi and Wisconsin, is the nephew of SIU assistant Anthony Beane Sr. and the cousin of incoming freshman guard Darius Beane.

As for Weiher, it has yet to be announced where he intends to transfer to following his request for release from SIU.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
