The SIU women’s basketball team defeated the Indiana State Sycamores (2-11, 0-2 MVC) 64-45 on Sunday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Three Salukis — freshman forward Abby Brockmeyer, freshman guard Makenzie Silvey and senior guard Kylie Giebelhausen — scored in double digits on the afternoon.

The Salukis started the game aggressively and went on a massive 19-3 scoring run following the opening tip.

Despite Southern’s run, the Sycamores rallied immediately and went on a 14-0 scoring run that cut the Saluki lead to 19-17 midway through the second quarter.

Southern responded with six quick points to rebuild its lead. However, Indiana State fought back and narrowed the deficit to 27-25 at halftime.

SIU was unable to separate itself from the Sycamores in the third quarter. Each time the Salukis got ahead, Indiana State answered right back and kept the game within one possession.

With minutes left in the third, the Sycamores claimed their first lead of the game at 37-36.

However, the Salukis reclaimed the lead with a 10-0 scoring run that spanned over four minutes.

With just five minutes left in the game, Southern went on yet another 11-2 scoring run which closed out the game for good.

Southern outrebounded the Sycamores 37-29 in the contest and shot an efficient 56.3 percent from the field.

Brockmeyer led the charge with a game-high 16 points. She also recorded a team-high eight rebounds and blocked a career-high four shots.
