Saluki cross country takes 12th in both divisions at Commodore Classic

SIU cross country placed 12th in both the men’s and women’s races Saturday morning in its first-ever visit to Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic.

The Salukis competed in the 14th annual Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park on Saturday, their second meet of the season.

The event, hosted by Vanderbilt University, consisted of a mix of 15 men’s teams and 17 women’s teams from the SEC, Big Ten, Conference USA and local teams. The men ran an 8K course while the women ran a 5K.

In the men’s meet, Southern took 12th place with a score of 340 on a combined time of 2:15:59. The host squad from Vanderbilt placed just ahead of the Salukis in 11th place with a score of 325 on a combined time of 2:14:34. Middle Tennessee State University led all 15 teams with a score of 64 on a combined time of 2:06:18.

The SIU women took 12th in their event with a score of 338 on a combined time of 1:36:29. Vanderbilt took second in the event with a score of 93 on a combined time of 1:29:56. Ohio State took first in the women’s event with a score of 60 on a combined time of 1:29:23.

Southern had six men compete in the 8k as well as six women compete in the 5k.

Redshirt junior Josh Maier led the Salukis in the men’s division, finishing 29th out of 149 runners with a time of 25:54.3.

Redshirt sophomore Megan Krolak, coming off of her first place finish on Sept. 2 at the Golden Eagle Invitational, led the women’s team by finishing 31st out of 176 runners with a time of 18:13.6.

The SIU cross country team will run again in their third meet of the season at the Notre Dame Invitational. The event begins at 1 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana.
