More than 30 people have died from an 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Mexico’s Pacific coast, officials said Friday.

Oaxaca state governor Alejandro Murat told broadcaster Televisa that 17 more people have been confirmed dead in his state, on top of the five deaths already announced in Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s poorest states.

Eight people were killed in the state of Chiapas and two in the state of Tabasco, Mexico’s civil defence chief Luis Felipe Puente said earlier.

President Enrique Pena Nieto called it the strongest earthquake to hit the country in nearly a century and urged citizens to remain vigilant as aftershocks rattle the southern region.
