Ceremonies set for interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela
November 11, 2014
Ceremonial services for interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela, who died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, have been planned.
A public visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center Ballrooms with reflections from the Rev. Joseph Brown at 7:30 p.m., SIU President Randy Dunn said. A private funeral service will be Friday.
“In honor of Paul’s service to the state and university, the governor’s office has authorized the university to fly the flags on campus at half-staff until sunrise on Saturday,” Dunn wrote in a message from the president Monday.

The flag at the Stone Center is at half-staff, along with other flags on campus. The SIU School of Medicine, @siusom, tweeted a photo Monday of its flag at half-staff.
“People knew Paul had SIU-Carbondale in his DNA,” Dunn said at a press conference Monday. “That’s not manufactured out of whole cloth, a person either has it or they don’t. … People knew Paul loved this university.”
