The creator of a racist video encouraging violence during the May 2 protest on campus has been identified by authorities.

The Department of Public Safety worked with the FBI and Jackson County State’s Attorney’s office to identify the maker of the video, who is a 19-year-old white male, according to a university press release. He is not affiliated with the university or any of the groups represented in the video.

Interim chancellor Brad Colwell said he was happy with the investigation done by DPS.

The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s office has opted to not pursue charges, citing the video could be protected speech, according to the release.

“While we acknowledge the decision not to file charges, identifying the individual is an important step forward,” Colwell said.

Police are still seeking information regarding vandalism to Faner Hall that happened around the same time as the video. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Department of Public Safety at 618-453-3771.
