Young team struggles against ranked team

SIU baseball scored its first runs of the season, but not enough for the first win.

The Salukis (0-2) lost 16-4 to the No. 2 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (2-0).

TCU scored 10 runs in the first three innings to give the Horned Frogs a double-digit lead.

SIU answered with a three-run fourth inning. TCU cancelled it out with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Salukis scored their last run in the fourth inning. The Horned Frogs scored three more runs after.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Pruemer made his first collegiate start. Pruemer was a late-inning relief pitcher last season. He gave up 7 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings. Pruemer suffered the loss.

TCU sophomore right-handed pitcher Brian Howard earned the win. Howard gave up 1 run in 2 innings from relieve. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander made the start but only pitched 4 innings, making him ineligible for the win.

Saluki freshman designated hitter Hunter Anderson recorded two of the team’s 10 hits. He finished 2-for-5 and 1 run scored.

Horned Frogs senior infielder Keaton Jones led all hitters, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

The three-game series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.
