Michael Smith, a junior from Chicago studying political science and president of Black Male Roundtable, braves the cold temperatures as he participates in a march organized by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity on Jan. 18 at SIU. “Dr. King is so important because his work still continues today,” Smith said. “Not only by civil rights leaders within the black community, but also elected officials such as members of Congress and also the president of the United States.” During the march participants chanted, “The people united, will never be defeated,” and sang, “We Shall Overcome” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
