SIU police seeking information on suspect in graffiti incidents
January 6, 2016
The Department of Public Safety is asking the public to help identify a person of interest after more than a dozen instances of graffiti have been found on campus during the last month.
Criminal defacement of property has been reported 13 times since Dec. 9, according to SIU police’s crime log. SIU Police Chief Benjamin Newman told the Southern Illinoisan that police believe “several” of the incidents are related.
The suspect or suspects wrote text such as “GOXXMMON,” “Jerk,” “EBK,” “VON” and “MOM.” The defacements occurred at locations such as Anthony Hall and the Recreation Center.

Police are looking for a white male, about 18 years old, who is 5-foot-10-inches tall and 140 pounds. Police say he has “brown hair and sideburns that extend to an under-chin beard.” In the Dec. 9 image taken from surveillance video of the suspect skateboarding across the north pedestrian overpass, a walkway above Route 51, the person of interest is wearing a flannel shirt, glasses and a baseball cap on backwards.
Police are asking anyone who recognizes this person or has information regarding these crimes to contact the department at 618-453-3771 or Carbondale Crime Stoppers at 618-549-2677.
