University must be made safe before students return

By Gus Bode

Dear Editor:

Many people are concerned about the well being of the students and faculty, but it seems that the administrators of the campus are not.

If you are going to have classes in session you need to make darn sure the walkways are walkable and the parking lots are plowed. I was walking on campus this morning and I was lucky to find a patch of sidewalk with salt on it. How do you expect the students to get into the Engineering Building when the stairs haven’t even been cleaned off? I had to pull myself up by the handrail. In the courtyard behind the Engineering Building, I had to ‘ski’ down the stairs.

That is completely ridiculous and uncalled for. What are the students with disabilities supposed to do when they can’t even get their wheelchairs up the ramps? The parking lots at the Applied Science and Arts Building were not plowed. Who wants to dig their cars out of snow to get to school and then have to dig their cars out again, or better yet, get stuck in the parking lot trying to get to class? It is the administration’s job to make sure the campus is safe enough to have the students on it.

Considering the circumstances that arose last year, you would think they would have learned by now.
