A person who was in possession of a replica shotgun was detained Monday morning outside of the Student Center, according to an SIU police tweet. 

There was no threat to public safety and the person who was detained — a white male in his mid-30s — is not affiliated with the university, SIU Police Chief Benjamin Newman said. 

Newman said the airsoft gun had an orange tip on it, which lets people know the weapon is a fake or toy. He said the man left it outside the Student Center and later came back out to sit by the airsoft gun.
