Southern Illinois junior Piotr Baranski was named the Missouri Valley Conference Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, his first such honor.

Baranski defeated Wichita State sophomore Miroslav Herzan 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match Sunday. He remains undefeated in singles and doubles against conference opponents.

In his first semester at SIU, Baranski is 11-2 in singles, good for a team-best .846 winning percentage. He and partner senior Jonny Rigby are 8-1 together at the No. 1 doubles spot. Rigby and Baranski’s doubles match Sunday was cut short when the Salukis won the doubles point.
