The female pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Tuesday underwent leg surgery and will leave Carbondale Memorial Hospital in a few days.
Natasha Mahmood, a sophomore from Chicago studying English, was struck by a gray Pontiac Grand Prix as she crossed the crosswalk south of the Student Recreation Center.
The surgery was aimed to repair two bones in Mahmood’s leg, Gray said, and she is expected to recover and return to school soon.

Pastor Bob Gray, chaplain for the coroner’s office, said Mahmood’s parents came to the hospital to be with their daughter while she underwent surgery.
The driver, Andrew R. Heller, was arrested for driving with a suspended license, according the police report.
