Dawgs Nite out was a hit yet again with the Salukis, with its usual long line of students waiting for a night of fun at the Student center Saturday night.
A plethora of events were happening for students to engage in including inflatable games in the ballrooms, lazer tag, bingo with prizes, custom keychains, arts and crafts, raffles, Bowling and Billiards, free food and more.

Bingo is always popular with students with chances to win prizes like hygiene products and toiletries, dorm decorations and other essentials for college students. The Raffle hosted gave students a chance to win a projector, a polaroid camera, a nintendo switch or a lego set.
With 163 new students enrolled and hundreds of returning students, Dawgs Nite out was lively with friends being made, reconnecting and getting in the groove of the new school year.
“I was just looking for something to do with my friends,” said Aaliyah Ross, a junior majoring in Hospitality, Tourism and Event Managment. “It’s really important to get out, engage, and mingle and find peers here at SIU.”

This is Ross’s third time attending Dawgs Nite Out and said the Student Programming Council always does a good job putting these events together.
“I love a good air hockey [game] and I love beating my friends at bowling,” Ross said. “I would love to see some go karts … maybe some roller skating again.”
Upstairs outside of the inflatable area you could find groups of Salukis playing hacky sack, air hockey and jumbo jenga. Downstairs in the food court area was the famous karaoke with all types of music from rock to hip-hop.
Tranfer student Trevor Parrent sang Come together by the Beatles. With Parrent being new to SIU, he came to the event to meet people and hangout.
“’I’m a musician, and I haven’t really gotten to meet other musicians since classes haven’t started yet,” Parrent said. “ I was like, this is going to be a great platform to be able to outreach to people and have fun.”
Parrent came to Carbondale a year ago to play at punk houses in the area and enjoyed the community he found.
“When you come from Southern Illinois and kind of the cornfields, you don’t get that community, especially as a musician or an artist or anything within self expression,” Parrent said. “So that’s what really brought me here and that’s what made me fall in love with Carbondale.”
