Clarence Rupert (4) yells in celebration as the Salukis come back from a double-digit deficit against the Flames of UIC March 7, 2024 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Former Saluki forward Clarence Rupert announced on Sunday that he will be playing for the Iona Gaels of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference next season.

Rupert transferred to SIU from Saint Peter’s in the 2022 offseason after his freshman year featured an Elite Eight run from the Peacocks. He averaged 6.6 points per game with the Salukis, starting nearly every game in his two seasons in Carbondale.

The move marks a return to the MAAC for Rupert, sharing a conference with his former team in Saint Peter’s. A native of Philadelphia, Rupert played in New Jersey for Saint Peter’s, and will play in New York for Iona.

Rupert joins Troy D’Amico as former Salukis to commit to new schools in the wake of head coach Bryan Mullins’ firing. They were two of several Salukis to enter the transfer portal once it opened.

Players yet to make decisions include Scottie Ebube, AJ Ferguson, Cade Hornecker, Kennard Davis, Jarrett Hensley and Jovan Stulic. They have until May 1, when the transfer portal officially closes, to either commit to a new school or return to SIU.
