Northern Iowa sweeps Saluki softball; SIU outscored 42-7 in weekend series
Southern Illinois softball suffered perhaps one of the most lopsided weekends in program history, as it dropped three straight on the road against the Northern Iowa Panthers (26-11, 15-1).
The first game of a doubleheader on Friday saw SIU tie the program record for most runs allowed in a game, losing 17-5. The Panthers scored at least three run in every inning, only getting four chances to do so as the game ended by run rule after five innings.
That record wouldn’t last long, as UNI managed to break it the next day with an 18-2 victory over the Salukis on Saturday. The final game in the series was cemented with a nine-run bottom of the fourth inning, setting up another run rule win for the Panthers.

The only game this weekend that lasted the full seven innings came in the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader, but still saw the Salukis get shut out in a 7-0 loss.
Southern falls to 29-11 on the year, and 10-7 in conference play following the sweep. It extends their existing losing streak to six games.
However, the Salukis will have an opportunity to right the ship in a weekend series beginning April 21 against the lowly Bradley Braves (11-34, 3-15). Southern will play host to the Braves, returning to Charlotte West Stadium where they are currently 17-0 on the year.
