SIU taken down by UIC 3-2

Head coach Ed Allen has words with one of the officials regarding the call on the previous play during the Salukis 3-0 win over the University of South Carolina – Upstate on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021 during the Saluki Invitational at the Banterra Center at SIU.

Friday night the Salukis (14-8) hosted the University of Illinois Chicago Flames (14-8). The Dawgs were taken down in five sets by the Flames who scored a total of 79 points combined, compared to the Salukis close 74.

In the first set the Salukis went on a seven point scoring streak to put them back on top 15-11. An error by Nataly Garcia ended the streak, but the Salukis came back for another three points to keep the lead and take down the Flames for a 25-21 win in the first set.

The Flames got a quick 2-0 lead in the second set, but that was shut down with an error by themselves. The Salukis and a four point score streak, followed with the same by UIC giving them the lead and eventually a 26-24 win against the Salukis.

Southern took the third set 25-16 with two three point scoring streaks. In return UIC took the lead in the fourth set with a six point scoring streak and took the Salukis 25-12. The fifth set was a close one with UIC winning 17-15.

The Salukis beat the flame in kills(64-62), digs(55-51), and assists(62-58). They were led in kills by Nataly Garcia and Annabelle Sulish who both had 18, followed by Tatum Tornatta who had 16. Anna Jaworski led the team in assists with 52 and Claudia Bobb led with 15 digs.

The Salukis are back in action Oct. 22 at Davies Gym to take on Valparaiso at 5 p.m.
