Salukis secure 15-point victory over Indiana State

The Saluki women’s basketball team (7-10, 4-8 MVC) secured their first road victory of the season on Feb. 19 against the Indiana State Sycamores (4-11, 1-9 MVC).

Southern gained a 22-point lead at halftime and won the game by 15 points, 84-69, with three Salukis scoring in double digits. 

Senior guard Makenzie Silvey led scoring for the Salukis with 26 points and sophomore guard Caitlin Anderson led scoring for the Sycamores with 22 points.

The Salukis started the game with a 3-pointer from junior guard Payton McCallister. This was followed by a layup from the Sycamores’ senior forward Jamyra McChristine.

A steal from SIU’s junior guard Caitlin Link led to a 3-point play extending the Salukis’ lead, 6-2.

Indiana State fought to decrease Southern’s lead with layups from sophomore guard Jasmine Elder and McChristine, but SIU held the lead.

The Salukis increased the score gap, 12-6, after layups from senior forward Rachel Pudlowski and redshirt senior forward Gabby Walker.

A layup from Pudlowski and a 3-pointer from Silvey gave the Salukis an eight point lead, 19-11, at the end of the first quarter.

SIU continued lengthening their lead in the second quarter with two 3-pointers from freshman guard Quierra Love and a layup from Walker, making the score 27-15.

A 3-pointer from Silvey increased the Salukis lead to 14 points.

Despite scoring from Indiana State’s redshirt junior guard LeAndra Echi and redshirt freshman forward Mya Glanton, Southern continued increasing their lead, 43-18.

The Salukis ended the first half with a 22-point lead, 45-23, after a layup from McCallister. 

Silvey led scoring for SIU at halftime with 15 points and Elder led scoring for the Sycamores with five points.

Scoring went back-and-forth in the beginning of the third quarter, but the Salukis remained in the lead, 49-29.

The Sycamores decreased SIU’s lead to 14 points, 49-35, after a 3-pointer from junior guard Natalia Lalic.

Southern’s kept the lead near the end of the third quarter, 56-39, after a layup from Walker and basket from McCallister.

Indiana State continued scoring at the end of the third quarter with layups from Anderson and McChristine, but the Salukis held the lead, 67-50.

The Sycamores started the fourth quarter with a basket from Anderson. This was followed by a four-point run by the Salukis, making the score 71-52. 

Two 3-pointers from Silvey and Pudlowski, increased Southern’s lead to 25 points halfway through the fourth quarter.

Two free throws and a layup from Anderson decreased SIU’s lead to 15 points with one minute left to play. 

Although Indiana State continued scoring at the end of the game, it was not enough to take the lead and the Salukis won 84-69.
