Bradley sweeps Southern, wins game two 80-86

Bradley University (7-4, 3-1 MVC) completed the sweep against the Southern Illinois women’s basketball program (5-4, 2-2 MVC) on Jan. 9, winning the second game of the series 80-68.

SIU remained close to the Braves at the end of the half, but Bradley pulled away near the end of the third quarter with scoring from junior guard Lasha Petree, leaving the Salukis unable to catch up.

Senior guard Makenzie Silvey led scoring for Southern with 17 points and Petree led the Braves with 24 points and three blocks.

The Salukis started the first quarter with two free throws from senior forward Gabby Walker after a foul from senior forward Emily Marsh.This was followed by a layup from Bradley’s senior forward Nyjah White.

A five-point run from the Salukis with scoring from Silvey and senior forward Rachel Pudlowski increased their lead 7-2.

The Braves gained the lead with two free throws and a 3-pointer from Lasha Petree, making the score 10-9.

At the end of the first quarter, both teams scored continuously but Southern was unable to regain the lead. The period closed with the score at 23-13 in favor of the Braves. 

Senior forward Abby Brockmeyer started scoring for SIU in the second quarter with a mid-range basket.

Both teams had an even run half way through the second quarter and the Braves maintained the lead 30-22.

The Salukis then cut the lead down to five with a 3-pointer from junior guard Payton McCallister.

SIU gained the lead, 35-34, late in the second quarter with a basket from Silvey.

The Braves regained the lead at the end of the half with two free throws from redshirt senior center Uche Ufochukwu making the score 41-39.

McCallister led scoring for the Salukis at the half with 13 points and White led for Bradley with 14 points.

White started the third quarter for the Braves with a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Silvey.

Southern regained the lead with a basket from McCallister making the score 44-43.

After several minutes of back and forth scoring, Bradley gained a six-point lead with a layup from senior guard Gabi Haack and a basket and layup from Lasha Petree.

The Braves increased their lead near the end of the third quarter with a four-point play from junior guard Chloe Rice making the score 60-50.

Sophomore guard Mahri Petree and Lasha Petree ended the quarter with a layup and a 3-pointer pushing the Bradley lead to 65-54.

Bradley continued increasing its lead early in the fourth quarter with two free throws from senior forward Emily Marsh after a foul from Brockmeyer.

This was followed by a four-point run with scoring from White and Haack.

SIU ended the run with a layup from junior guard Caitlin Link assisted by McCallister.

Steady scoring from the Salukis at the end of the fourth quarter was not enough to close the 12-point gap and Bradley secured the win 80-68.

Southern is scheduled to take the floor again on Jan. 15 and will face off against the Loyola University Ramblers. A tip-off time has yet to be determined.
