SIU announces mandatory testing for students living in campus housing

By Staff Report, News Desk

SIU will be testing on-campus students for COVID-19 and recommended off-campus students be tested before returning for the spring semester.

Students returning to campus housing will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, according to an email sent to all students on Wednesday.

The email said students will be contacted by phone to pre-register and will receive an email with information about scheduling a testing time.

Students living off campus are encouraged, but not required, to get tested before returning. The email said if an off-campus student tests positive, they should stay home until cleared and notify the university by filling out the confidential reporting form

The email said on-campus testing will be available to all students regardless of where they live once classes begin.

Students are encouraged to take precautions, such as avoiding public places and wearing a mask, to avoid exposure to COVID-19 before returning to campus. The email also suggested self-quarantining if possible.

Classes begin on Jan. 19 and final exams will take place May 3 – 7. Spring break will not take place this semester “in order to minimize risks associated with travel,” the email said.

Residence halls open on Jan. 17 at 9 a.m.
