In an email sent out to Southern Illinois University students on Sept. 28, Austin Lane, SIU’s chancellor, said the break between semesters will be expanded by one week and there will not be a traditional spring break.

“The decision regarding the spring semester schedule was considered very carefully with input from multiple groups, including Undergraduate Student Government. Graduate and Professional Student Council and Graduate Assistants United,” he said.

Spring semester move in will begin at 2 p.m. on Jan. 17. Classes will begin on Jan. 19 and final exams will take place May 3 through May 7.

Classes will be offered like fall semester where instructors will decide whether classes will be online, hybrid format, or in-person.

“The situation with COVID-19 is fluid,” Lane said. “We remain flexible, diligent and committed to the safety of our students, faculty and staff.”

The Daily Egyptian reached out to Jon Shaffer, SIU’s housing director, regarding questions about move in and room and board. He said Information concerning housing for the last two weeks of the semester will be posted soon.

Shaffer said other information is available on the website, but as of Sept. 29 the Summer & Break Housing pages have not been updated since 2019 semester.
