SIU names three finalists for chancellor position

SIU named three finalists for chancellor on Friday. These individuals will participate in a two day interview process via Zoom.
The finalists are Sarah Stapleton of Western Michigan University, Austin Lane of Texas Southern University and Kenneth Evans of Lamar University, according to a release from SIU.
Stapleton is a professor of chemistry/biochemistry and biological sciences and has been at Western Michigan University since 1990. She served as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs 2017-2018 and is currently special assistant to the provost, according to the release.

Lane was president of Texas Southern University from 2016 to Feb. 2020. He previously served as president of the Lone Star College system in Texas and holds a doctoral degree in education administration, according to the release.
Evans has been president of Lamar University in Texas since 2013 and holds a doctoral degree in Marketing, according to the release.
Stapleton will have a public forum from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on April 17, Lane’s will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. April 21, and Evans’ will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on April 23.
These forums will be held online and will open two days early so those interested in participating can fill out a feedback forum about the candidate.

SIU system President Daniel Mahony said he hopes to have a new chancellor in place by July 1.

Why is a PhD required for this position?

Why is someone like Lane even being considered for a job that requires a PhD? And what about his tenure at TSU where left under a cloud of suspicion? Should students, alumni, faculty and staff be concerned?
