Organization establishes Native American presence

Organization establishes Native American presence

First-year Native American students may have difficulty adjusting to campus life, because culturally, they have different traditions and values, said Serina Cinnamon.

Cinnamon, vice president of the Native American Student Organization and a graduate student in education from Milwaukee, said without a Native American Resource Center on campus, resources such as NASO can be hard to find for first-year minority students, unless the Registered Student Organization advertises heavily.

The four Illinois Education Association unions — the Association of Civil Service Employees, Graduate Assistants United, the Faculty Association and the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association — set a strike date for Thursday and even though leaders of the unions have said they want to avoid a strike they have also said they…

Unions’ leaders say negotiations continue without progress

Both unions, administration hope to avoid strike

Editors Note: The following story covers bargaining issues for two of the four unions in contract negotiations, Graduate Assistants United and the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association. A story focused on the remaining unions, the Faculty Association and the Association of Civil Service Employees, will appear in Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Egypitan.

Without NTTFA members, it won’t be ‘business as usual’

Anita J. Stoner NTT Faculy Association president

There are three other locals in labor disputes that do not involve tenure.

Members of the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association, as our name implies, do not receive tenure. We believe we would be more accurately named “Professional Teaching Faculty.” We are central to the university’s core mission.

The NTTFA has about 150 instructors who have earned a “continuing” appointment, a few modest perks if that instructor…

La Russa retires after 33 years as manager

The St. Louis Cardinals added to their off-season to-do list, as they now have to search for a new field manager for the 2012 season.

After 16 seasons in St. Louis, manager Tony La Russa announced his retirement in a press conference Monday morning. The announcement came three days after the Cardinals won their 11th World Series title — their second during La Russa’s supervision.

In Monday’s press conference, general manager…

The mouse that roared

Dear Editor:

After reading the the Oct. 6 sports staff column “Strike effect on Saluki Athletics minimal,” I experienced myriad emotions.

First I was simply amazed, then I was slightly offended. Then I came to the realization that many people, whether employed at SIU or not, are not fully aware of what employees who are represented by the Association of Civil Service Employees union actually do on campus.

The article quotes an…

Don’t give up, there’s still opportunity for resolution

Dear Editor:

The time for some semblance of rationality and win-win thinking in SIU labor negotiations is long overdue.

In contrast to most recent editorials that decidedly support either the administration or the faculty association, I am personally extremely disappointed with both parties. Each side shows little evidence of mastery of the well-developed art and science of negotiation.

Neither side appears willing to make significant compromises vital to the greater interests of…

SIUC Graduate Assistants’ benefits comparable to other universities

EIU, WIU have similar fees, healthcare expenses

While Graduate Assistants United union members ask for better healthcare coverage and lower student fees, surrounding universities have similar pre-existing benefits for their graduate students.

GAU President Jim Podesva said union members want to lower out-of-pocket health expenses for health care coverage from $1,000 to $250. Currently, graduate assistants are not offered coverage for pre-existing conditions until they have been in the graduate program for…

The Carbondale City Council will address several budgetary items at its routine meeting 7 p.m. today at the Carbondale Civic Center.

“They are all what I characterize as routine budget adjustments,” said Councilman Don Monty.

Funds for the unexpected items are being transferred…

Adminstration must have final authority to make definite decisions

Adminstration must have final authority to make definite decisions

Glenn Poshard Siu President

I was asked to write an op-ed last year on the issues of shared governance and good faith bargaining. With a few minor changes, I would like to submit that op-ed to the Daily Egyptian.

I am confident a strike can be averted, however I believe — despite assertions to…

Occupy supporters inspired by Buckminster Fuller

Occupy supporters inspired by Buckminster Fuller

Nearly 90 years ago, Buckminster Fuller had already begun to lay out most of Occupy Wall Street’s core principles.

Occupy Wall Street supporters have said they vow to end corruption of democracy and will no longer tolerate greed of the 1 percent of Americans who continue to become wealthy while the other 99 percent becomes poorer, according to Occupy Wall Street’s website.

Get Out with Ord: Horror has a home in southern Illinois

Get Out with Ord: Horror has a home in southern Illinois

I learned something very important about myself between 10 p.m. and midnight Oct. 15.

I do not have a horror movie scream.

Luckily, that isn’t required to enjoy a haunted house. This is good because there are a handful near Carbondale popping up in October like daisies in May. If you have $12, and a couple of hours, there’s a haunt around the area that will thrill you.

Cardinals turn it up to 11

Cardinals turn it up to 11

The St. Louis Cardinals won 11 games during the 2011 postseason and finished up with their 11th World Series title in the team’s history.

As a lifelong Cardinals fan, it was the ultimate experience to witness this historic victory inside St. Louis’ basilica of baseball. It was an emotional roller coaster for the improbable Redbird team that beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 in Game 7 Friday night.
