Wires: Welcome to my world

Here she is.  Welcome to the new site.  I hope you like it, I hope you come often.

You can read updates on facebook and follow us on twitter.  Post your comments and see photos of the diverse community that we live in.  Journalists are both part of the community and historians of it.  Online news can reflect your world and shape your world.

The poem, Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy  begins:

“We are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.”

History is dotted with movements of young people who belived they could make a difference.  I believe that it is still possible for us to see the world renewed, stereotypes shattered, and poverty reduced.

One of my favorite authors wrote we shouldn’t let anyone look down on us because we are young, but we should seek set an example in life, in love, in faith and in integrity.

So yeah, this is just a new site.  It will continue to document and inform the history of Carbondale as the Daily Egyptian has for almost 100 years.  We’ll use words, photos, video and sound to bring you the stories that impact your campus, community, and world.

Whether it makes the paper or not, it could be you who dreams, makes music, and shakes some form of the world.

I’m a journalist because I believe that my peers can still change our world, and I want to document it when it happens.  Wires connect things, carry information, and most technology has them.  In this blog the different members of the web desk will be able to connect with you about technology and online journalism.

So post, like, tweet, comment, follow, submit events, read, watch, dream and shake southern Illinois.

Bravo Ashley! The new site not only looks nice but from what I’ve seen so far it seems far more usable than the previous version.

I visit several sites every morning to catch up on news. When I lived in Carbondale, and was able to pick up a copy of the DE, I felt like I really knew what was going on at SIU. When I moved away I never got that feeling from the website and was almost at the point where I was going to stop visiting completely. The new site has revived my interest.

    Best of luck.

P.S. I have long been an admirer of the photographers at the DE.
